HCT students undertake more than 250,000 hours of voluntary work
DUBAI – Over 10,000 students of the Higher Colleges of Technology, HCT, completed 285,000 hours of voluntary work during the academic year 2016-2017, Mohammad Omran Al Shamsi, Chancellor of HCT, revealed on Zayed Humanitarian Work Day, which falls on the 19th day of Ramadan every year.
Al Shamsi said that more than 250 charitable and community service organisations were involved in the HCT Voluntary Work Programme through its 17 colleges across the nation.
“The success of the HCT Voluntary Work Programme underscores the directives of the HCT’s Board of Trustees to promote the leadership’s approach regarding humanitarian and charitable works during the Year of Giving and throughout Ramadan the month of giving,” he added.
The HCT Voluntary Work Programme comprises voluntary initiatives for the various emirates in the UAE, in co-operation with government and private institutions. The aim is to help in the development of skills as well as qualify and empower youth in the area of voluntary work.
The HCT aims to encourage all of its students across the 17 colleges to complete 100 hours of voluntary community work in a variety of local and international activities, both outside and inside the college. Voluntary work hours are a non-academic requirement for graduation and will be made up of 25 hours over 4 academic years.
The programme is part of the HCT’s efforts to activate the “Learning by Doing” philosophy to empower youth to undertake voluntary work.
