UAE will join world in celebrating ‘International Day of Education’ Today
ABU DHABI, 23rd January, 2019 (WAM) — The world will celebrate the annual “International Day of Education” tomorrow, after United Nations, UN, member countries allocated 24th January to celebrate education, to guarantee good, fair and comprehensive education and provide educational opportunities for everyone.
The UAE will join the world in celebrating this occasion, in line with official government interest in the education process, which it considers a key part of human development, as well as to highlight the country’s educational development and advancement.
The UAE guarantees the right to education for all its citizens and covers the expenses of public schools and academic institutions. Its laws also stipulate mandatory education until high school.
The UAE is a leading country in terms of the rate of participation in higher education, with around 95 percent of female students and 80 percent of male students joining higher education institutions after receiving their high school diplomas.
Providing a leading education system is one of the pillars of the National Agenda of the UAE Vision 2021, which includes an indicator for measuring the percentage of schools that meet specific teacher quality standards.
In September 2018, the UAE Cabinet approved the federal budget for 2019, which is valued at AED60.3 billion. More than 50 percent of the budget was allocated to education and social development, with education alone accounting for AED10.25 billion.
Due to the UAE’s desire to provide the best level of education to future generations, the Ministry of Education developed its 2010-2020 strategy, which includes 50 long-term initiatives that will be implemented over 10 years, such as the “School Leaders Programme,” the “School Olympics Project,” and the Emirates Standardised Test, EmSAT.
The year 2013 was a pivotal moment in the development of the UAE’s education process, as the Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, called on the Emirati people to participate in the largest brainstorming session in the world, to advance the country’s health and education sectors.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid also announced a two-day ministerial retreat for the UAE Cabinet, which was completely dedicated to discussing the new ideas generated for these two sectors, through a government innovation laboratory that witnessed the participation of all federal government ministers.
The UAE has succeeded in keeping pace with modern educational developments that rely on smart technologies, and many of its universities provide remote learning services that utilise modern communication tools.
