Dubai students surpass int’l benchmarks in IB exams
GEMS schools saw the number of students sitting IB Diploma exams increase to 451 this year.
Results of the International Baccalaureate (IB) exams are out and Dubai students have continued to perform above international averages.
In a statement sent to Khaleej Times on Friday, GEMS Education said their students’ performance continues to surpass international benchmarks, with a 2018 average pass rate of 92 per cent, set against the international pass rate of 78 per cent in 2017. GEMS schools saw the number of students sitting IB Diploma exams increase to 451 this year.
Top-performing GEMS Education students include Ameerah Parvez from GEMS Wellington Academy – Silicon Oasis, who achieved an outstanding score of 45, and Sunna Chang from GEMS World Academy and Omar Al Khatib from GEMS Wellington International School, both with an impressive 44.
James MacDonald, vice-president education (US and IB Curriculum Schools), GEMS Education, said: “We are immensely proud of this year’s cohort of GEMS IB Diploma students and their results. The IB Diploma programme is very rigorous and our students’ hard work has paid off. I am confident that they are all well-prepared to make a positive difference in the world thanks to their education.”
Another top performing school is Repton School Dubai. Headmaster David Cook said: “We are delighted to announce that 98 per cent of our IBDP students have been awarded the IB Diploma, scoring an average of 34 points or more per student, against a typical global average of 30 points (2018 figures).
“In the Year of Zayed, we are also very proud that 100 per cent of our Emirati pupils have successfully earned their IB Diploma or IBCP certificate,” he added.
Cook continued: “These excellent results ensured that all our students achieved the results required for admission into their university of choice, with a high percentage entering the prestigious Russel Group of Universities in the UK or Ivy League in the US. This year, one student gained 42 points and is off to UC Berkeley in California and one student gained 41 points, securing a place at Oxford.”
Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) students have also excelled in the exams as they registered an overall average of 35.5.
A JESS official said: “A total of 61.9 per cent of our students achieved 35 points or more; equivalent of two A* and two As at A-level. The 13.4 per cent of students that scored 40 points or more, equivalent to more than four A* at A-level, have reached a level that would turn the head of any university in the world.”
